Leadership Scholarship programme case study: Saima Saleh

How has taking part in the Leadership Scholarship Programme shaped or transformed your development as a leader?

Taking part in the leadership programme really boosted my confidence and helped me to realise what I was actually capable of. It took me out of my comfort zone but I feel that’s where real growth happens!

I have been able to develop and use my leadership skills to help me in a range of different contexts: at school, with my work advising on RE as well as the work that I do through my Race and Education Film club.

What impact has the programme had on your practice, your school or organisation, or the wider religion and worldviews education community?

I carried out some school-based research in my first year of the scholarship programme: something I never thought I’d do, as ‘research’ was something that academics did, and I never saw myself as an academic. I examined the impact of using etymology to enhance the children’s learning in religious literacy. I also looked at the use of dual coding to help children remember substantive knowledge. As a result of my research, my school rolled out my idea of getting children to make their own knowledge organisers and use etymology to understand key terms and be able to make links with and build on previous knowledge, across all other subjects. I have spoken about my research at numerous national RE conferences.

What did you find most valuable about the programme?

Making connections with others was an essential part of the programme. Knowing that you weren’t by yourself and that you could share ideas with other people in a safe space.

Looking back, participating in the reading group helped me to understand more about key thinking in the subject, as well as learn about its history and recognise when and how key changes were made. It’s only when you truly know where you ‘came from’ that you can get to understand and value the journey of where you are going to.

I also think the mentors had a big part to play in the success of the programme. Having someone to help guide you and give you much-needed support was pivotal in the success of the programme.

Where has your journey taken you since completing the programme, and how has it helped you take the next step in your career?

My leadership journey helped me to realise that I have the potential to aim higher than I thought I could ‘reach’. I have since spoken at numerous national and global conferences about my work: this is something that I never thought I’d be able to do in a million years! I have since co-run a Race and Education Film Club which has a global platform and is continuing to draw attendees from various walks of life.

Why do you think people should apply to the Leadership Scholarship programme?

I think anyone who loves the subject and loves a challenge should certainly apply for a place on this amazing programme. You will not look back! Having the opportunity to develop a whole range of skills and to have a personalised programme catered to your needs and interests is incredibly empowering. This programme will make you realise and achieve your full potential.
