Home Education Grants

Our Home Education Grants support families and groups across the wider West Midlands region, including Birmingham, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire. Browse the sections below to discover the small and large grants awarded in 2024–25 and 2025–26, supporting creative and inclusive explorations of religion and worldviews through visits, storytelling, arts, sensory activities and encounters with diverse faith and belief communities.

Small grants 2025-26

Birmingham, West Midlands, £200
Exploring themes of life, death, sacrifice and hope through The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, this project combined classroom learning based on a Charlotte Mason approach, with a visit to Handsworth Cemetery. Young people investigated Christian, Islamic and secular perspectives on death and remembrance, encouraging thoughtful reflection on belief, loss and community

Birmingham, West Midlands, £200
This project will explore similarities and differences between Islam and Christianity through visits to St Paul’s Cathedral and Cambridge Central Mosque. Inspired by children’s own questions about faith and belief, the family will investigate religious teachings, meet members of different faith communities, and create artwork and a digital presentation to share their learning with other home educating families.

Kidderminster, Worcestershire, £200
Exploring the diversity within Christianity, this project will visit different churches and Christian traditions across the West Midlands. Through conversations with faith leaders, experiencing worship through art, music and architecture, and creating their own creative response, learners will investigate how shared beliefs can be expressed in different ways across denominations.

Birmingham, West Midlands, £180
This project will explore a wide range of religions and worldviews through visits to places of worship across Birmingham, including churches, a mosque, a synagogue and an Orthodox church. Through first-hand experiences, research and creative reflection activities, learners will investigate different beliefs, histories and traditions, developing understanding and respect for a diverse range of faith communities.

Large grants 2025-26

Birmingham, West Midlands, £1,500
This project will deliver a structured Religion and Worldviews programme for home-educated children across Birmingham. Through weekly workshops, storytelling, drama, art, discussions and encounters with people from different faith and belief backgrounds, children will explore a range of religions and worldviews while developing curiosity, empathy and critical thinking skills.

Telford, Shropshire, £1,500
Through an eight-month project called Oneness over Duality, families will explore stories, legends and creation narratives from a range of faiths and cultures. Combining storytelling, visits to places of worship, art, drama, knitting and weaving, the project will encourage children to discover connections across different religions and worldviews through creative, hands-on learning

Shropshire, £1,425
This six-month programme will bring home educating families together to explore a range of religious and non-religious worldviews through faith visits, cultural celebrations, creative workshops and an Arts Award. Activities will include learning about Islamic festivals, Sikhism, Buddhism, Christianity and secular worldviews, with resources and children’s work shared widely across the home education community

Birmingham, West Midlands, £1,490
This creative programme will explore religion and worldviews through textiles, music and ceremonial breadmaking. Working alongside professional artists, families will investigate how beliefs, values and cultural traditions are expressed through art, food and creative practice, encouraging reflection on identity, community and different ways of understanding the world.

Birmingham, West Midlands, £1,500
This project will bring families together for a series of Faith Celebration Days exploring religions and worldviews through research, discussion, creative workshops and encounters with people from different faith communities. Participants will create and showcase original artwork, writing, music or movement inspired by their learning about diverse beliefs, traditions and celebrations.

Birmingham, West Midlands, £1,500
This project will create a sensory learning space where children can explore religion and worldviews through music, food, stories, artefacts and conversations with people from different faith communities. Monthly sessions and visits to places of worship will encourage curiosity, critical thinking and respectful engagement with diverse beliefs and cultures

Small grants 2024-25

Birmingham, West Midlands, £200
A project exploring the significance of religious objects through creative arts and crafts. Children will delve into the meanings behind items such as rosary beads, Diwali lanterns, and prayer rugs. The project also includes visits to Birmingham Cathedral, Singers Hill Synagogue, and Birmingham Central Mosque. The grant will support the purchase of books, craft supplies, and cover travel expenses.

Birmingham, West Midlands, £200
An immersive learning project designed to develop curiosity, respect, and critical thinking. Key activities include visiting local places of worship, undertaking a creative arts project, experiencing cultural cooking, and documenting the journey through a digital portfolio.

Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, £200
Exploring monotheistic and non-monotheistic religions, this project will include visiting places of worship and creating a multimedia presentation using recently developed IT skills. It aims to foster understanding of diversity, and the project will be shared with a local home ed group, SEN group and forest school.

Walsall, West Midlands, £200
The project will support an autism-aware exploration of religion and worldviews, incorporating creative scrapbooking, photography, and drawing, along with visits to places of worship. The project outcomes will be shared with local home education groups.

Worcester, Worcestershire, £170
“Roots of the Earth” will delve into the rich worldviews, traditions, and spiritual practices of indigenous cultures globally. The project will highlight how different indigenous communities connect with nature, ancestors, and spirituality, offering a unique perspective on how these connections shape their way of life.

Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, £100
This project aims to research the local repurposing of religious and community buildings, such as church buildings being used for purposes beyond worship and the transformation of a local pub into a mosque. The family will explore how community groups from diverse worldviews utilise different spaces in their area and what these spaces mean to different generations.

Staffordshire, £100
An inclusive project designed to explore religions through sensory experiences. Children will engage with food, music, religious artefacts, sounds, stories, scents (such as frankincense), artwork (like rangoli), and visits to places of worship.

Birmingham, West Midlands, £200
A project to create educational displays focused on different religious traditions, using highly visual and sensory materials to engage children with special educational needs.

Large grants 2024-25

Shrewsbury, Shropshire, £1,497
This year-long EYFS & KS1 Worldview programme for 24 children from 14 home-educating families will explore Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism through workshops, visits to places of worship, and festival-themed activities. The programme includes hands-on arts and crafts, storytelling, and independent learning support.

Rugby, Warwickshire, £489.26
The project will promote cultural understanding through stories and play. Families will gather weekly for 20 weeks at a local church hall, reading from “A Treasury of Traditional Tales,” discussing the stories, and engaging in play with international characters. This initiative will encourage parental interaction and children’s engagement with different countries and cultures.

Coventry, West Midlands, £740
The project will create a Faith Trail for home educators, facilitating access to local places of worship and faith communities. By establishing connections with worshipping communities from six major faiths, the project will design educational experiences and an online guide to promote interfaith understanding and combat prejudice.

Walsall, West Midlands, £530
A Muslim home education group will offer craft stations and food-related activities to learn about other faiths and cultures around the world, leading to greater respect for all religions. The grant will also cover materials and hire of the venue where the activities will take place.

Wolverhampton, West Midlands, £1,500
The project will hold regular sessions at a community centre over 24 weeks, exploring faith and arranging visits to various places of worship, including a synagogue, mandir, gurdwara, Buddhist temple, mosque, and church, allowing children to experience these environments firsthand.

Smethwick, West Midlands, £800
Through this project, a family will explore their heritage and worldview, deepening conversations about ancestry and perspectives. The project will involve design, research, integration, and sharing phases, culminating in a facilitated event for home education families to celebrate and share their own heritage.

Birmingham, West Midlands, £500
The production of a short educational video about how one home educating family explores and expresses their Christian worldview through music, stories, games, songs and celebrating community values. The video will be shared online to prompt other home educators to consider their own worldview.
