Leadership Scholarship programme case study: Michelle Sullivan

How has taking part in the Leadership Scholarship Programme shaped or transformed your development as a leader?
Taking part in the Programme completely transformed my career almost immediately and continues to do so. I began the course as a Head of Department and newbie RE advisor and within two years I had become a strong RE lead in my county and an Initial Teacher Training subject facilitator.
What impact has the programme had on your practice, your school or organisation, or the wider religion and worldviews education community?
The impact on my county has been fantastic. I have been supported by many in the RE community in producing an agreed syllabus alongside our fabulous primary advisor, who also went on the Leadership Scholarship Programme!
The experience and advice was, and remains, invaluable. With my new responsibilities came more chances to present to my peers on a wide range of RE topics and curriculum, which in turn helped me gain much experience and confidence and fed into my leadership responsibilities in my school. Maintaining a constant relationship with the wider RE community means that I am able to train our new teachers in a cutting-edge Religion and Worldviews approach to our subject.
What did you find most valuable about the programme?
The most valuable aspect was the 1 to 1 mentoring. This meant I made many contacts and gained a lot of confidence and experience from a wonderful bunch of professionals, who were always willing to help.
Where has your journey taken you since completing the programme, and how has it helped you take the next step in your career?
I have gone from strength to strength within my school and outside of it. I love all aspects of what I do – teaching, advising, writing syllabus and mentoring trainee teachers.
Why do you think people should apply to the Leadership Scholarship programme?
I think that by joining this programme you are doing the best thing for your own career and also for your setting. It was an incredible learning curve, full of surprises, new friends and professional growth. I am so glad I did it and would recommend it to anyone thinking of upskilling or diversifying their career.
