Teaching Sikhi in RE: Engaging Communities with Teaching Religion
Professor Jasjit Singh, University of Leeds

This project, funded by the Culham St Gabriel’s Trust, explored how Sikhi is taught and represented in Religious Education (RE) across UK schools. Through a national survey of 106 RE teachers and a stakeholder meeting, the research identified key challenges including limited teacher confidence, inconsistent curriculum coverage, and weak engagement with Sikh communities.
The findings revealed a strong appetite among educators for more inclusive, accurate, and accessible resources. The project proposes practical recommendations for improving the teaching of Sikhi, including the development of a national resource hub, enhanced teacher training, and stronger SACRE representation. It also highlights the importance of lived experience, suggesting ways for Sikh organisations, speakers, and youth to contribute meaningfully to RE.
